Title: Meditation: Saturday, June 15, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, June 15, 2002
    Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Kings 19:19-21
    Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-10
    Matthew 5:33-37

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Let your 'Yes' mean Yes, and your 'No' mean No.

At every stage in our lives, we battle with our ego and personality
as we try to do God's will in our daily life. Very often we are
tempted to take the 'easy route' the road travelled by the majority
of our fellow men and women. It's human nature to rationalise our
behaviour. We can make almost anything morally and socially
acceptable by developing rational in-depth arguments supporting or
negating a cause. And the more we bring our causes into the arena of
public opinion...it takes good men and women to do nothing for evil
to thrive...

Jesus calls us to transcend our human tendencies and be unequivocal
in our response to Him. Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit He has
empowered us with all the necessary tools to discern how we should
respond in tough life situations. There is no room for grey areas!
Jesus calls us to say 'Yes' to Him so that He can enlighten our path.

Today, we ask our Mother Mary to grant us the grace of discernment so
that we may allow simplicity into our lives which allows us to say a
deeper 'Yes' to Jesus.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
