Title: Meditation: Tuesday, June 25, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, June 25, 2002
The Twelth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    2 Kings 19:9-11,14-21,31-36
    Psalm 48:2-4,10-11
    Matthew 7:6,12-14

A reflection on today's Scripture . . . .

What then, is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets?

The law and the prophets are two of the great divisions of the TANAHK, the
fourfold division of the Hebrew scriptures. The law and the prophets were
the most important to these because it was through these that God spoke
and helped the people of Israel to sanctity.

What does Jesus tell us is the summation of the Law and the Prophets? 'Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you.'
How often have we heard
this admonition? Do we understand or believe it? Do we practice it?

This gives us a very simple, very down-to-earth, very doable picture of
sanctity. Always treat others in the way you would like to be treated. No
ecstasies, no visions, no arduous penances or piles of prayers -- just
simple acts of love, this is the meaning of the law and the prophets. We
become holy when we treat others as though they were holy. And you know
what? As one of God's people, they are holy. Each and every person is
sacred and precious in the heart of God. And all we need to do to
acknowledge that fact, is to put others before ourselves, to love others
through simple, small actions: to remain quiet when we really wish to
correct people who should know better, to smile when we feel like
spitting, to help when we want to hinder. We can live the fullness of the
law when we put ourselves out of the way. We can become like Jesus, the
incarnation of the law, when we choose others first.
