Title: Meditation: Wednesday, June 26, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, June 26, 2002
    Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    2 Kings 22:8-13;23:1-3
    Psalm 119:33-37,40
    Matthew 7:15-20

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In the seventh century B.C., King Josiah heard the Book of the Law
for the first time. With remarkable and speedy faith, he brought
together all the nation, took them to the Temple, and there renewed
the long-forgotten Covenant.

What a lesson for our times! Vatican II rediscovered the great
importance of Scriptures in the life and consciousness of the Church.
Now, the Sacred Scriptures are more and more prominent in our daily
lives. Despite the terrible scandals of priestly sin, we can honestly
say that these are the worst of times; but they are also the best of
times, for out of all this comes a vast soul-searching for bishops,
priests, and people of the Church. And how much stronger our church
can be, with a renewed power of witness, and a recovered sense of
trust. We must pray daily for all this to come about. Like the events
of the seventh century in Israel, let the startling events in our
Church be for all of us a wake-up call to repentance, deeper prayer
life, and new hope.
