The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, June 30, 2002 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 2 Kings 4:8-11,14-16 Psalm 89:2-3,16-19 Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Matthew 10:37-42 A reflection on today's Scripture: As children of God and followers of Christ, we're called to faith: a faith that knows the power of God to dispel the darkness of sin. We have a long history that details that faith, as seen in a small episode in today's story from the Old Testament. We are also exhorted by St. Paul to be aware that we can be raised from the darkness of sin by the Great Sacrifice of Jesus. Although we may be "chosen" through Baptism for this special sanctification and promise of eternal happiness, it is far from being a guarantee. Noooooo, we have to make an effort - a constant effort - to seek the wonderful light of Christ and turn away from the darkness of evil. Jesus said that "he who will not take up his cross and come after Me is not worthy of Me." We need to shake ourselves loose from the secular illusion known as "the real world." I like to think of it as "a temporary world", a place for us to grow in our love of God, to prove our fidelity to Him. Our quest for the light of Christ begins by reading scripture and other holy writings daily, by regularly receiving the grace of a good confession in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, followed by reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion frequently. Then it will become our joy to take up the cross of Jesus daily. - Joachim, ocds YOU CAN HELP to evangelize the Word of God: Please recommend our website to your friends and Catholic webmasters.
