The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, June 29, 2002 Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Sts. Peter and Paul, apostles Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 12:1-11 Psalm 34:2-9 2 Timothy 4:6-8,17-18 Matthew 16:13-19 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: "I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith" These are St. Paul's words in today's second reading which I think are powerful and inspiring for all those who desire to live a life worthy of a Christian. So many times in scripture we are reminded that living out our choice to follow Jesus is not an easy path. There is so much unseen which we are called to take on faith even when our direction seems cloudy, yet we know in the depth of our hearts that the Truth of Jesus and the example of His ways is our only answer to everlasting peace and fulfillment. Jesus called and continues to call 'ordinary' men and women to follow Him, to love Him and through their answer to His call, to bear wonderful everlasting fruit despite the transience of this world. We are all called to this vocation. So perhaps at the end of today, conscious of all the choices we have made in the course of the day we may ask ourselves: Have we competed well for Christ? Have we done our bit today to run the different race which Jesus asks of us, Have we persevered in our Faith? Jesus loves us and want us to share in His love. Today let us ask Him for the courage and perseverance to follow Him today and everyday. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
