The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, July 6, 2002 Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Maria Goretti, virgin martyr Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Amos 9:11-15 Psalm 85:9,11-14 Matthew 9:14-17 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: In the scriptures today Christ speaks about fasting and that His followers need not fast while He was still with them. (We don't fast when the cause of our joy is among us.) Christ does make reference to fasting once the 'bridegroom' is gone. We do hear in scripture of Christ fasting in the desert, but He was doing that more as an example to us than penance for Himself. Primarily we see Christ's life as a witness to obedience and fidelity; obedience to His Father in heaven and His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph (his foster father). Jesus certainly gave us an example of a prayerful life also, but we get a feeling of day to day faithfulness to the ordinary details of life. Once Christ was in His active ministry we see the fruits of that prayer, obedience and faithfulness. Speaking of penance, we all know that it can take more self-discipline to be faithful to the everyday demands of our state in life than to do the penance of missing a meal or a treat now and then. Day to day faithfulness to duty, done in the generous spirit of Christ, will bear tremendous fruits. Dear Lord, please help us to be faithful to our day to day responsibilities. Amen. - Joan of Jesus, ocds ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) YOU CAN HELP to evangelize the Word of God: Please recommend our website to your friends and Catholic webmasters.
