Title: Meditation: Wednesday, July 10, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, July 10, 2002
    Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Hosea 10:1-3,7-8,12
    Psalm 105:2-7
    Matthew 10:1-7

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The prophet Hosea speaks a dreadful word of warning to an Israel
grown cold and lax. The Lord threatens destruction unless they
reform. In our days, the harsh criticism of the press may be
interpreted as a warning to us all that a purifying renewal is needed
in our lives as Catholics. In our country, we're gradually realizing
how material prosperity can dull our souls to the needs of so much of
the world that suffers in misery. The solution: we must inform
ourselves, sensitize ourselves, and be more generous when we're asked
to help.

In the Gospel, Jesus calls His apostles a motley crew! But somewhere
in that group, there is an apostle whose gifts compare with ours. If
we lived in Palestine in those days, He might have called us. Actualy
Jesus has called us. In some church, somewhere, there is
documentation proving that fact through our baptismal record. To what
is He calling me? To justice, to mercy, to fidelity to His Church.
How will I fulfill my mission calling today?
