Title: Meditation: Wednesday, July 31, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, July 31, 2002
    Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time
    St. Ignatius of Loyola

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Jeremiah 15:10,16-21
    Psalm 59:2-4,10-11,17-18
    Matthew 13:44-46

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Jeremiah is in the depths of discouragement as he complains to the
Lord. He accuses God of deceiving him, like an attractive but elusive
brook. Does God console him, soothe him? Not at all! God tells him to
cut out this foolish babble, to talk sense, and then he will again be
the mouthpiece of the Lord.

More, not less, commitment, discipline, and sacrifice is God's
urging. It all has to do with that pearl of great price (the Gospel)
which is beyond our means if we insist on keeping possession of
lesser goods - material attachments, addiction to pleasures that
distract the soul, selfish holding back of the time necessary for
prayer and contemplation.

If we really want that treasure, we must let go of everything. Even
the great prophet Jeremiah held back, so we must not be discouraged
at our obstinacy and lack of trust. Just imagine our last day on this
earth. What choice will we wish we had made?
