The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, August 1, 2002 The Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Alphonsus Liguori Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Jeremiah 18:1-6 Psalm 146:1-6 Matthew 13:17-53 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: In today's Gospel Jesus reminds us that until the final day good and evil will both be present in this world. In every age there seems to be sentinel events that confirm this reality. In our own time each one of us has little trouble identifying what appears blatantly evil. However, do we remember to look for what is good and acknowledge the ultimate source of all goodness? I say this not to underestimate the presence of evil, but to help us remember that there is also good in the world; living proof of God's manifold grace at work. Sometimes it seems as though evil is triumphing; and it is in these critical moments that we must not become despondent, but persevere knowing that salvation has already been accomplished and that God's will, will be done. And God's will is no less than this: that all be saved. For our part, cooperation with God's will is what is required, for as we know God gives us the frightful ability to choose our ultimate fate. Though many might be the victim of evil deeds, no one will be eternally destroyed by it unless they willingly choose it. Let us, then, continue with determination - with faith, hope and love, even in the face of so many manifestations of evil, certain that all God promised would one day be accomplished. Happy, he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord, his God.
