All the talk about rescues brings some fond memories back.

Before the hubby & I were married, we were more or less living
in sin. haha! We are both artists, and were quite a pair of
bohemians back then. We lived in a ramshackle, but lovable
building that had seen past times as a grocery store, and a
mechanics garage. It was located across the street from the
University of NC at Greensboro. Most of the dwellings around
the University were rented by college students. It was always
bustling with students walking past our door on their way to
or from class, and there were several eating places nearby.

One bright morning, Eric ran into the 'studio' (as we called
it), and said there was a Great Dane running around outside.
He was looking for something to use as a lead, assuming he
could catch her. This was pre-Dane days for me, so I was a
little leary of large dogs. I rushed outside with him, and
there was a beautiful fawn natural earred girl, very tall I
thought >G<.
Eric coaxed her to him, and put a rope around her neck, and we
took her inside.

We bought her a leash and collar, and I took her on long walks
around the University. She was the first dog of her size I'd
been around, so I had to get used to her. She would run
circles around me as we walked, giving me strange looks, like
"what are you doing with this string leading me around like
this?" She wasn't affectionate towards us..tolerant was more
the word. She never wagged her tail at us...she seemed down in
the dumps. She would lie on the couch with us and allow us to
pet her all we wanted. But she never returned the affection.
We kept her for about 8 days. Eric had put notices up at the
University about her, but no one had contacted us. One summer
evening, we had the door propped open, but where she could not
get out.

Suddenly, after days of dragging herself around, she came to
life instantly! Standing at the door she began going
absolutely NUTS! wagging, whining, "talking"! jumping! A young
man had appeared at the door with his small Beagle type dog,
and peering into our "studio" said, "I know this dog. She
belongs to a friend of mine, and her name is Sheba!"

We asked where he lived, and wouldn't you know it? it was a
couple of blocks from our studio..in a duplex. We told the
guy to please tell his friend to come by and see if it was
really his girl. Even though Sheba wasn't smitten with us, we
liked her a lot, and had hopes that we could keep her. About
half an hour later, a car pulled up to the curb, just outside
the door. Sheba had not budged an inch since the young guy had
left.

She obviously recognized the car and went bezerk! Sheba's
owner got out of his car and as he came to the door, she was
off the floor...all four feet..jumping for joy! There was no
mistaking this reaction ...pure JOY! She jumped on him, and
gave his face a royal licking!! The girl was in Heaven! The
young man thanked us, and off he and Sheba went, into the
sunset. She never once looked back. haha!

After that, we would see her occasionally in the neighborhood.
The guy did not bother to keep her at home. She had the run of
the University. Shortly after the reunion of Sheba and her
owner, we got Alyce, our merle girl. Sheba helped me realize
that I would love to have a Dane in my life permanently. One
of the last times Sheba came to visit us in the studio, I had
Alyce outside on a leash. Alyce was no more than 2 or 3 months
old at that time. Sheba would run zoomies around Alyce, but
never got close enough to me to pet her. I think she was
afraid of being kidnapped again. >G<
