Agreed.  When I've got time, I'll code up a revamp of the
repository-identification code that only looks for _darcs/ or perhaps
_darcs/format rather than looking for _darcs/inventory.  Or someone else
could volunteer.  I believe that we *ought* to have decent error messages,
provided darcs recognizes the hashed repository as a hashed repository
(which is what the format business is designed for).
