This is more or less what I'd expect.  SSH is an encrypted protocol,
and requires negotiating credentials on every connection.  If one of
your machines has a slowish CPU, this can take a lot of time.

SMB is not an encrypted protocol, and if you sue an encrypted
transport (such as SSL/TLS) for carrying SMB, then the credentials are
only negotiated once at mount time (``mapping'').

You may want to look into the various ways of multiplexing ssh
connections, which may or may not be described somwhere on the Wiki.
