For some reason, bash seems to get called by the name sh, which causes it to
enter some sort of compatibility mode for sh.

$ echo $SHELL
/bin/sh
$ ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 4 Feb 23  2006 /bin/sh -> bash

And unfortunately, in this mode, bash does not read either ~/.bash_profile
or ~/.bashrc, meaning that it only runs ~/.profile when I log in
interactively, and it runs nothing at all (as far as I can tell) when I log
in non-interactively. But thanks for the suggestion.

What is the operating system on the remote server?

$ uname -a
Linux clnet 2.6.11-xen0 #10 Thu Feb 23 12:02:29 PST 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
$ cat /etc/debian_version
3.1
