See my followup to issue1177 ( http://bugs.darcs.net/msg7216 ). As expressed in the followup, this is a request to change darcs behavior (semantics?) to do the right thing more of the time. I believe that it is fully forward & backward compatible, and I do not see any reason to make this change as an option.... However, other minds should study this to make sure nothing important has been overlooked.
