If I remember correctly, this has to do with setting up a subdirectory
structure for the files in the pristine cache, so the files are not
all in a single directory.

I am wondering if the same approach can be used with the patches
directory.

As the length of history increases, the number of patches in that
directory can get pretty large.

We have one repository with 27658 patches, 17367 files, 232M (not
including _darcs). I just found out about another that we might need
to import that has 44104 files and is 1600M. I can imagine that it
will have quite a few patches.

I am not much of a haskell guy (excited about it, very little time to
devote to reading 'Real World Haskell' and learning it), but would
like to help with testing these optimizations.
