“But this did not bother me. I experienced one of the most amazing days of cycling of my life. I cannot even begin to describe the route. It had some of the craziest downhill technical sections that I had ever ridden on a cross-country mountain bike. “You should have seen the wooden bridges that we had to cross. Sometimes they were about as wide as our bikes’ wheels and, to make it even more adventurous, the bridges were also very wet and slippery. “One wrong move would have meant that we would end up falling onto the rocks two metres below. I knew the course was going to be technical but riding it was crazy, to say the least. “We did 1000 metres of climbing over a distance of 30 kilometres, which suited Max and me because we were able to make up so much time. We ended up finishing fifth overall and 3 minutes and 30 seconds behind the leaders.
