Gear Report : Recession Glasses or practical brilliance? See what I mean.
So my brand name glasses with clear lenses got scratched and while still in the process of taking back to a brand name dealer and coughing up some hard earned cash to replace them, I happened to see a pair of those clear safety glasses in our local hardware store. A whole R43 rand for a clear lens pair with a rather sporty looking frame. So I decided that with that day being one of the coldest we will do a night ride on this year, and with a fresh chillin breeze which normally has my eyes watering all the time. This would be a good test. Well I am pleasantly surprised. My 'NORTH' pair of safety glasses worked like a dream. Firstly I checked that there are no distortions from the lens and that was good. Then they were fairly comfortable fit, with the clear lens wrapping around the sides of the eyes. That definitely kept the wind and a lot of dust out for a snug ride. And if you are hiking in the bush and have a phobia of a cobra spitting you in the eyes... well this pair will do a great job of protecting you. It is also of a safe flexible plastic design that should you fall, you will not have to worry about breaking glass going into your eyes. I also tried a quick test of fitting them over my reading glasses and with their simple adjustable arms it fitted rather snug. At a quick glance they certainly look like an expensive brand name, but may have some folks turning their noses up when you tell them how much it didn't set you back. But if you ask me, it was a great buy. And when they do get scratched, sat on or lost.. not a big deal... I just get another one and off I go again. Being a more practical over brand name personality.
