*Subject:* *Dark & Dirty Ride Report*

Right, so it's 11:34, I just got out of a nice warm shower and now it's
time to put the fingers to the keys and get this week's ride report out
while everything’s still fresh in my mind. Tonight was my first Dark &
Dirty ride. I’ve been hearing about it from Daemon for some time now. DK
and Dirt Rider also told me about it before on the Thursday morning
Groenkloof rides, and tonight I finally decided to join in on the fun. I
must say I was considering whether or not to come when I saw it drizzling
outside at 18:30, but luckily I just got into the car and made my way to
Irene.

So everybody, once again, met up at the Irene Village round about 19:00. I
must say, I didn’t really expect there to be more than 5 people, but an
amazing 23 people showed up in the dark and in the rain. Who would’ve
thought!

All geared up, some with rain jackets (which I don’t really think helped in
the end), we set off with our lights, no cameras, to take on the action. The
first piece of single track through 1 meter high grass was quite
interesting. I was still trying to get used to riding with only a little
spot of light in front of me. It didn’t shine very far thought the tall
grass. There were one or two times where I had to guess where the trail is
and sometimes I was just bundu-bashing through the grass to find the track
again. It was quite a thrill.

Next, we hit a bit of a rocky trail. I couldn’t really see the rocks, but I
felt they were the as I went over them. I just kept going. Sometimes it’s
just better not to know what’s in front of you.

Ok, so I can’t remember exactly what came next. All I remember is it was
wet. Oh wait, yes, that’s it, Hardy, got a flatty and needed a pomp. So
after waiting for him to do his thing, we continued on to some lekker mud
pools and then suddenly it stopped raining. Or we were under the
highway-train-bridge. Hardy once again had a problem with his rear tyre so
some of the guys pulled off the tyre and discovered a tube. We then had to
reverse and take a detour as there was some construction work going on under
the bridge. We took very low tunnel under the highway. We picked up a
couple of dubbeltjies through a veld down to the road. Now, I’m beginning
to fade. Waiting next to the road, Hardy needed a pomp…again. I helped him
inspect his tyre and we found a dubbeltjie. I thought to myself, I’m glad
he’s had 3 punctures so far, that means I he’s going to have to write a ride
report.

An end down the road we got to the part next to the Waterkloof airport base.
It was quite lekker racing down the side of the wall, in the rain. Daemon
just went past me on his single speed and I started chasing him, when I saw
him struggling. I thought this is my chance. Then I hit the same spot and
mud started layering onto my tyres. I didn’t quite expect that.

Anyway, it was getting late and everybody was wet, so after a vote, some for
plan B, others for plan 2, it was unanimously decided that we return to
Irene Mall for food and drinks at Spur. So after a quick spin and a wash at
Engen we were off again.

This was a nice smooth ride until I decided to get off the side walk into
the grass and catch up with Daemon, who was riding in the middle of the
group somewhere. As I reached him, he challenged me to launch an attack. I
was just about to gather some speed to get in front of him back onto the
sidewalk when, a concrete slab or something appeared out of nowhere and I
hit it straight on, flipping over the handlebars and landing in the
grass. Luckily
the bike and I were both fine. I think some of you guys got a bigger fright
than me. It must have been quite a sight and I wish I could’ve seen it from
a third-person perspective. Anyway I was up just as quick as I was flying
through the air and I immediately knew nobody was going to remember Hardy’s
punctures. So back up on the bike, we completed our ride back and ended the
ride with some nice hot chocolate and Easter eggs at Spur. Overall it was
an awesome experience! I never thought It would be this much fun! I’ll
definitely be joining you guys for D&D again. Happy birthday D&D!
