Is this a git copy or any of the version that your distribution comes with?
If the former, please try cleaning up you instalation directory and
reinstall. If the latter, please tell us distribution and version of
darktable.
Whatever it is, Picasa should not be holding your darktable initialization
process. If anything, it is that in the latest git version gphoto2 has been
disabled. This matches the fact that you had to unplug some USB gizmo.
