sounds weird. never had it. i would start to look at
src/common/mipmap_cache.c, where it loads the thumbnails from disk
(dt_mipmap_cache_deserialize). my guess is that something goes wrong in
that part already? maybe the serialization during shutdown is the part that
fails? it doesn't write the mipmaps if you're working on an in-memory db
(--library :memory:).
