thats around 500MB, you could up that a little. if tobias is right about
the integer overflow you can safely try values up to 2 billion, maybe 4
billion if we have an unsigned in there. which would still only be 4 gig,
so i think we should check that and make sure the value is passed as size_t
all the way.
