Please, please, don't make things more complicated than they are. As 
Markus has pointed out the *only* reason for coloradjustment is to tune 
down the automatic color scaling of a very minor number of modules. It's 
just a quick access option for those who think that the automatic color 
scaling is too strong.

Only use coloradjustment mode in that specific use case (as also 
mentioned in the user manual).

In all other cases you have all power to do what you want by using 
hand-tuned curves for the a and b channels. You can even make them 
linear if you just want to keep color unchanged. Then use whatever blend 
mode and mask to apply your curves to a certain image detail.
