Let me describe the concrete use-case. I have a photo with a face I want to adjust. So I use a mask to select the face, adjust tonal curve to tune its tonal appearance and use _coloradjustment_ mode to decrease color contrast scaling of _the_face_ . I guess it's natural. If no mask is used the effect works as described.
Workaround: Two instances of tone curve, one blend mode lightness, the other blend mode color, this way you can control the strength of the color adjustment manually.
