Some time ago I also tried. Despite the improvement you can in SQL by
enhancing queries there, it also happens, when you have lots of images per
row displayed because each time you move the mouse you trigger a redraw of
the center area.
Of the whole center area. You need it to change the decorations of the
image that loses the focus and the one that gets its, as well as the
effects on decorations when hovering them.
We should be clipping and only drawing what needs to be redrawn. I made
some tests in a git branch (my doubt now is if it is in github or only
locally) and that really was speeding things up. I never came into
implementing the double buffering we need to keep the center view sane
across redraws.
