The problem I see is with grouping borders. Those can potentially span the 
whole screen, and I am not sure how efficient it is to compute the images that 
are affected. Except if we could get away with just redrawing the grey space 
between thumbs everywhere (just O(#rows) lines drawn) to remove all old 
borders.
