I believe that zoomable snapshots are being worked on by jcsogo in his 
snapshots2 branch.  Not sure how far along he is
though.

Yes that would be cool, though I'm not sure the side-by-side functionality is 
being worked on ATM.  It doesn't sound
like it'd be impossible to adapt the above work into something like that, 
though.
