In fact. I'm also very interested in this functionality.
I'm currently developing a toolbox to generate easily timelapse from raw
acquisition thanks to darktable. Typically by varying one exposition
parameter, for example, from the first photo tuning to the last one of the
series.

It is done externally with a Java tool writing xmp files.
It could be very convenient if darktable could update automatically the
previews from new generated xmp (done externally by the tool).
The result would be easier to get on screen and much more faster for the
user.
