In the meantime it might be interesting to get some rough timings from the two programs in http://houz.org/tmp/timestamps.tgz -- usage instructions are in the comments of the .c files. Just so we know what we are talking about. On my system a little over 9k xmp files took about 8 seconds for find_changes after the kernel caches were dropped.
