Well, it actually creates a line with two surrounding areas defined by 
circles swept along the line: an inner area and a transition.  Once you 
specify the line shape you can modify nodes on the line and the sizes of 
the areas as well as the overall opacity of the stroke with the scroll 
wheel on the mouse along with various modifier keys (ctrl, alt, etc.). 
You can do additional brush strokes as well, but they're grouped 
together by module in DT, rather than by "layer" as in LR.  You can 
reuse the drawn masks from one module in another using the mask manager 
on the left and the drawn mask pulldown list from with all modules.

Really, it's just a different approach... something that darktable is 
good at.  Thankfully, as with Linux, darktable is my primary system and 
I don't spend all my time wondering why it's not like the proprietary 
competitor.  Maybe that's why I like vim too... ;)
