What about a layer manager below the now mask manager? Where you
can paint layers masks with a brush/eraser with opacity/hardness settings
and apply them to tools like the masks now.
You probably want to use GIMP. darktable was never intended for such fine
detailed work and isn't supposed to become a full fledged, layer supporting
image editor. We are already suffering quite some feature creep and have to be
careful to not include a kitchen sink one day.
