yes, this is what the standard says, but it doesn't work if you have, say,
a raw + jpg of the same file in the same folder.

i would try symlinking/copying them. while xmp pretends to be a standard,
it's always a bit risky to write to those files from more than one
application (different ways of encoding zero length strings might lead to
crashes for instance). also data is less portable than you would like, so
some things end up in different namespaces for different applications. so
just to be sure i'd do a quick test run with a good backup on a small set
of images..
