AFAIK, that approach is supported by CompIcc as well. Although it requires some coding effort.

For other apps or colour non-critical work I just have to fiddle either with monitor mode (native gamut vs sRGB emulation) and with the assigned profile (colord) OR to stick to AdobeRGB emulation (which does not displays full colors so aggressively) OR to turn CompIcc on (and get used to Compiz WM).
