It's a DMG disk image. You can mount it and run darktable from there. Installing is just copying app bundle to /Applications directory and OS asks you if you want to replace the old version.
What I forgot to mention is that it's based on current git master (from which we released 3 RCs recently), so if you want to go back to 1.4.x, you should move ~/.config/darktable to some backup location and experiment with separate copies of your photos. Otherwise your database (and possibly some XMP files) will be upgraded and you will be unable to use it in old version of darktable.
