I assume by old version you mean rc1 (1.5.1). It didn't detect the
right DPI at all (since OS X always reports it as 72) which screwed up
other GUI things (like font size in bauhaus widgets). It was fixed
since then and the change is unrelated to Retina. The way it looks now
is the "correct" way, it matches how it's done on Linux. Changing the
resolution of display shouldn't change the physical size (in mm) of
fonts and widgets.
Native apps probably get font size from some system preferences, we
don't do that and I currently have no plans of adding such
functionality (font size is fixed in our darktable.gtkrc).
