Yes, the limitation is latex. But is that really a problem? I dont see an issue to create a temporary set of jpg from your raws. And since the contactsheet just shows small pictures, you can use small jpgs of lets say 500 pxl width. The creation is fast and they use just a few kB each. But you are right, for convenience the creation of the jpg's could eventually be included into the script.
