gdb is quite possibly cleansing your environment. What do you
have set in your shell / terminal session (outside of gdb) for
the following variables
LANG
LC_ALL
LC_MESSAGES
I'm betting that if you check those from within gdb, you'll
see them re-set to 'C' or something similar.
