After a complete wipe and reinstall, ALL of my problems simply disappeared.
Darktable boots up in the blink of an eye. Even better, I followed your
advice and installed the official Nvidia drivers using the instructions
online, and IT STILL WORKS!!!

So I'm happy :0)

NO MORE fiddling about for me... 

But sincere thanks to you both for taking the time to help. This was
actually a critical piece of software for me, so I'm delighted to have it
all working again :0)
