I use the RAW (after renaming them - I name them as data time from EXIF)
as a base. I always go back to them.
$(FILE_FOLDER)/../Renamed/$(EXIF_YEAR)$(EXIF_MONTH)$(EXIF_DAY)_$(EXIF_HOUR)$(EXIF_MINUTE)$(EXIF_SECOND)_$(FILE_NAME)
When I get the file name out of camera by the way it would be something
like "IMG_1234". I use file renamer like KRename to strip down to a
number only. This way when I use the setting above and rename to EXIF
data I only have the number preserved in addition. I do that because the
date and time are kept in the file name. Other methods exist - you just
have to find your own.
If the folder is "template" the subfolders would be
TEMPLATE$ ls -1
4x6
4x6_print
HDR
Originals
Renamed
VariousSizes
Video Converted
Video Original
Video Project
Then I use the other folders to export for whatever reason I need.
Like this
$(FILE_FOLDER)/../4x6/$(FILE_NAME)_4x6
The styles for export are actually very good and save a lot of time.
I never have to re import the produced JPG because I have the RAW files.
If I have to re export - DT would create a copy of the image.
To keep the set "clean" I would toggle overwrite the images. It only
takes effect for on export and reverts back.
This gives me good sets of final images and also I can go back to the
original if I need.
When I back them up I simply take the complete folder.
If I have to just print few images I would load a few collections and
export to a static folder
like /home/bhome/todo/$(FILE_NAME)
This way - I can take images from various years and collect them for
print in a specific folder. I always export however.
If you want - it is possible to re import the ready JPG from the final
folders and when exporting to just "copy" without modifications but it
is more of a preference - whatever works for you.
So the workflow is
1. Copy RAW in "Originals"
2. Rename the files with KRename to have only the number
3. Import in DT and export with rename function (to have better names)
4. Trash the originals
5. Import the "renamed" files - these become the master files
6. Sort what I need and what I don't (lighttable)
7. Correct the images (darktable)
8. Export finals using templates - I can queue few thousands there and
... have dinner while DT is working.
9. Take the finals and deliver for whatever need I have.

I use folders. DT allows navigating by folders (so these are my
"film rolls") Then it is broken down to sub folders.
1. folder for original images
2. folder for renamed
3. 4x6 high res
4. 4x6 web
etc.
The export is done with presets. and it is with relative paths
I am sorting 2000 images and even more this way without issues.
If I want to search for images - I use either tags or description.
1. Thanks, interesting
2. Are you re-importing your exports?
3. How does this works with the history of the original? or do they
become standalone like in the old days with Bridge/Photoshop?
