I have used NEC wide gamut monitor with their SpectraView software
(there is Linux version). SpectraView takes over monitor settings, i.e.
sets desired brigtness cd/m^2, “white point” and then uses USB-attached
photometer to profile. Profile then can be used by X and apps.

On the other hand, the same photometer can be used with
argyll/DisplayCAL. In this case, monitor is in “manual” mode, brightness
and individual RGB channels adjusted using monitor controls until
desired values are reached, and then profiling.

Good results in both cases.
