Unfortunately that is not the case. Until 2.0.x darktable didn't fail on XMP files with a version that was too new. So what happens when trying to load a version 2 sidecar with old dt is that you will get the default history stack and the version set back to 1. You have to set it back to 2 manually with a text editor to be able to get your history stacks back in a 2.2.x dt. We had that as a problem on one of the lists a while ago. As there is no way to fix how already released dt versions do things we can't fix that. :( Tobias
