dt will see what your file system shows it.

if your old system was /home/me/media
why not set up your new system the same way, move the photos and
accompanying xmp files from your old system to the new.  Don't forget to
move the old /home/me/.config/darktable/* to the new
/home/me/.config/darktable/

(and maybe ~/.cache/darktable )

now dt sees the same thing on the new system as it saw on the old.  You
can safely use dt to put your photos in the order/location you prefer.

*** this all assumes your new system locations match the old ***

that is the preferred (safest/easiest) method assuming photo locations
"currently" match the db.

note: this is what I believe is the safest/easiest/sanest method.  But
there are *many* ways to skin a cat.
