As a side note to the side note :
- on an EOS 5D Mk2, exiv2 reports 3 embedded files (1 tif and 2 jpeg):
exiv2 -pp IMG_3165.cr2
Preview 1: image/jpeg, 160x120 pixels, 14205 octets
Preview 2: image/tiff, 362x234 pixels, 508248 octets
Preview 3: image/jpeg, 5616x3744 pixels, 1262949 octets

But even if preview3 is full resolution it is only 1,2MB which means it is
quite highly compressed.
in-camera jpeg are about 5 to 6MB.

- most of the recent Canon can "develop" the RAW inside the camera AFTER
having got the RAW. You can apply the same tunings as the original in
camera jpeg (e.g. Images styles).
- But some press photographers must use only the JPG file... while it is
handy to have also the RAW file for a later use for something else.On
location transferring the jpeg is quick (via WiFi for instance), et then
the option to use the in camera develop option slow down the process...

So I suppose everybody has its *own* reason to have a given workflow...
