These may help you to see what is going on:

strace -e trace=open,getdents darktable 2>&1 | grep -C 10 xml

I can see this in the log if I add an aaa.xml in the .local/share/lensfun
folder

open("/home/aaa/.local/share/lensfun",
O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC) = 25
getdents(25, /* 5 entries */, 32768) = 136
open("/home/aaa/.local/share/lensfun/aaa.xml", O_RDONLY) = 26
getdents(25, /* 0 entries */, 32768) = 0

This with invalid content:

open("/home/aaa/.local/share/lensfun",
O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC) = 25
getdents(25, /* 5 entries */, 32768) = 136
open("/home/aaa/.local/share/lensfun/aaa.xml", O_RDONLY) = 26

** (darktable:6319): WARNING **:
/home/aaa/.local/share/lensfun/aaa.xml:1:1: Error on line 1 char 1:
Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>)
