Hi,
An old chestnut but hoping there may be a solution now. I need to
move a
years worth of images to a different drive.
They are organised by folder :
2016/1601-January/160102-project
/160124-another-project etc etc
2016/1602-February/160215-project
What I would like to do is simply just move the 2016 folder.
Thus not have to manually recreate a folder structure, open every
folder
again in DT to confirm xmp files exist, remove all images ( a
folder at a
time from the database ), move them a folder at a time and then
re-import
them. !
There must be a easier way
Any suggestions much appreciated.
if you are moving *all* which contain "/2016/" in the directory/file
structure, consider:
in lighttable view
collect images reset parameters
collect images folders %/2016/%
select select all
selected images remove
move the complete structure "/2016/*" to the new location
in lighttable view
import
folder choose new location: xxx/xxx/2016
to hedge against mistakes, make a copy of your library.db before
starting
and copy your images to the new location rather than moving them.
if all appears to be as desired, delete the old location images and
the
library.db copy
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'll run a couple of backups
and then
will give it a go.
backups are always good, but not always necessary. you just need a
backup
(or copy) of ~/.config/darktable/library.db and to retain your present
photo structure until satisfied with the move.
ps: unless containing private/sensitive information conversations should
remain on list where other interested might follow.
ps1: there is another way to accomplish your move but probably somewhat
slower and maybe safer but safer is debatible. instead of "remove" the
images after selecting all, you could "move" the images using dt as the
file handler. you can even create the new file structure with dt.
personally, I would do as I first stated. I believe it will be
safe
and much faster.
ps2: and I might even be an "older chestnut" :)
ymmv, gud luk
Apologies - like a young dolt I just keyboarded to reply rather than
mouse click to reply-list ( Alzheimer's is a terrible thing you know ).
I certainly am an old chestnut !

Right-clicking only gives me two options: "search filmroll" and "remove".
I'm using 1.6. Maybe that's an option only available in 1.7?
Using the "search filmroll" entry you can do it relatively quickly and
without
losing database-only info (like groups) and probably also keeping the
thumbnails:
- exit darktable
- move the whole folder tree in your file manager
- start darktable
- notice that dt can't find any images.
- use the "search filmroll" to point dt to the new root of your folder
tree.
All subfolders should be fixed automatically. At least that's how it's
supposed
to work.
