If highlights are too bright and shadows too
dark, I guess it's a matter of taste; in
exposure I can adjust it for either.

Not in this case. I can select the values for
the mask slider markers only as integers
between 0 and 100. So either it's 0 or it's 1,
but there is no 0.5. This wouldn't change with
a log scale.

BTW. I was suggested before to use the
keyboard, which I had forgotten about. I
realized that this was actually a very helpful
hint in many situations, but not with those
mask slider. But it is even difficult to grab
the markers. I'm sure I picked the lower one
(intending to move both at a time), but only
the upper moved. Then I found a spot down
right, well outside both triangles where it
works. But it's a constant strain on my old
eyes. I'd liked to find the standard
darktable adjustment tool here.

Hm. Are you referring to that standard
adjustment tool in darktable? Not just a log
scale slider? In that case, I most certainly
would agree it to be helpful which also allows
for non-integer values. In that case, keyboard
input would be allowed any way.
