But, Digikam (by default) proposes to *copy* the files to a destination 
directory within its directory tree (Collections/Albums).
Just "loading" or "importing" a folder with Darktable leaves the images where 
they are (in this case, on the camera) and does *not* copy anything. It only 
loads them into its database, and generates a thumbnail. On editing, it will 
try to generate a sidecar in the *same* folder as the image.

As you seem to be using both Digikam and Darktable, here is my workflow (for 
what it's worth):
Import in Digikam -> rename, cull, tag, and add captions and titles in Digikam  
-> switch to Darktable to edit and export. 
That's because I prefer the Digikam interface for renaming, culling, and all 
metadata operations, but I like the Darktable editor better.
