There is a possibility in the mask manager to change how shapes used in a 
drawn mask interact through a right click on the shape concerned.

In your precise case:
- I'd add the gradient mask first, 
- then add the mask covering the two people you want to protect, 
- then go to the mask manager and select "mode:difference" for the mask on the 
people in the "grp..." that contains the masks
(the name of that grouping is afaik "grp" followed by the name of the module 
where those masks are used).
