As you get used to darktable, I'd strongly suggest you limit yourself to a few modules and a basic set of controls within those.
The parametric sliders can be very confusing at the start and even though they are really powerful, I'd stay away from them while you are just getting comfortable with darktable. Work with drawn masks for now. They offer tremendous power when combined with a very few modules. As you learn, branch out one module at a time or one feature at a time.
