Yes, the information you can enter manually in the cropping module is an aspect 
ratio, not an actual dimension. You can enter dimensions in the export module, 
which is a bounding box that the image will be scaled to fit within. Neither of 
these do what you seem to want to do, which is take an exact sized crop from 
your image.

This can be difficult with larger-than-screen images in darktable... you need 
to view the image at 100% for the cropping guide movement to be pixel-precise, 
which is very awkward, but that's the only method I've found for the times when 
I've wanted to do this. The alternative is allowing a margin, then final 
cropping with an external application, which isn't terribly convenient.
That might explain why there is a difference between the crop size that you select and what you get.
