Keep in mind that, on export, Darktable (by default) won't override an 
existing file, but create a new file by appending a number to the filename. So 
if you re-export with different quality settings, you won't see a change if 
you just keep watching the open file (even if it automatically reloads on 
changes, there won't be any) .

Correct, and that's what is shown at google images (those 16 megapixels). 

My point was that that's way too much for most screens. That means that 
whatever program is going to show your image will do a downsampling to the 
available screen or window size. You're probably better off doing that down-
sampling yourself: you'll get a better quality and a smaller file size
